SUPER? SUNDAY

Deuteronomy5:12-15 "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy......"
Those of us who are of a certain age can remember a time when every Sunday was a special day. It wasn't special only once a year because of a football game.  Most stores, restuarants and even service stations were closed.  You would not see men mowing their lawn on Sunday nor would you see wash hanging out on a clothesline.  (For you younger people, that is how we used to dry clothes before electric dryers). My mother would not even mend anything or sweep the floor on Sunday.  The day was reserved for attending worship, sharing a meal with family and friends and sitting on the front porch relaxing.  That was a gentler, slower, safer world in which we lived.  God gave us the commandments not to limit our freedom but to give us our freedom by setting safe boundaries.  It is to our detriment when we move outside of those boundaries.  Neglecting the Sabbath has, in my opinion, done great harm to our culture.  It is no longer a special day.  Every day is pretty much the same except for holidays.  One of those holidays now is Super Bowl Sunday.  People who normally work on Sunday will request that Sunday off to watch a game that lasts about three hours and whose victor will  most likely be forgotten before next year unless they happen to be "our team".  There is no doubt that we won't remember the loser.  The frenzy increases each year with millions of dollars being made by the sale of everything from TV sets to snack foods to help us enjoy "The Big Game".  And let us not forget those eagerly anticipated super bowl commercials.  Quite honestly, I found them a major disapointment last year. You see, I am a fan myself and I look forward to the game each year no matter who the contestants are.  I just like football.  But what I like better is Sunday.  Every Sunday.  That is the day that I get to celebrate my Lord.  I get to see my brothers and sisters in Christ.  I get to sing songs of praise and feel the power of the Holy Spirit in corporate worship.  I get to, I don't have to.  I do it because I want to and because I need to.  Then I can go home and take a guilt free nap because it is a "day of rest".  Now that's a super Sunday!
