LENTEN SACRIFICES

We are approaching Ash Wednesday, February 17 and the beginning of Lent. Lent is the season when we examine ourselves, repent of our sins and begin to prepare ourselves for new beginnings with the Lord in the Easter season.  The night before he was crucified, Jesus took a towel and basin and washed the disciples' feet.  He said that he did this as an example that we should do likewise. It is usual for us to ask ourselves what we are going to give up for Lent.  Perhaps a better discipline might be to ask what we might pick up.  Instead of simply abstaining from something we should engage in some act of service.  Consider volunteering with one of the many service opportunities in our community such as KAIR or Independence Cay or Salvation Army.  Our church will be participating in Gospel Explosion on March 6.  We need volunteers to man the food concessions and church booth.  We need help setting up and cleaning up afterwards.  Jesus calls us to take up our cross daily and follow him.  The cross is a symbol of death.  Our cross is the symbol of dying to self. We exhibit our commitment to Christ by serving "the least of these".
